Porsche Mission E Concept puts Tesla Model S in its sights

To power the Mission E, Porsche's engineers use two permanent magnet synchronous motors, and they are similar to what's found on the company's  919 Hybrid  LMP1 racecar. In a single unit, the devices can both accelerate and recover braking energy. All-wheel drive with torque vectoring and four-wheel steering help the electric sedan lap the  Nordschleife  in less than eight minutes, the company claims. Capable of hitting 124 mph in less than 12 seconds, the Mission E is undoubtedly quick, but its speed in charging is especially impressive too. The concept utilizes an 800-volt system that Porsche claims can charge the sedan to 80 percent in just 15 minutes, assuming you can find a source for that much energy. That would be enough to offer about 249 miles of range in less time than getting a cup of coffee at a busy Starbucks. The E could also use a traditional 400-volt charger or power up inductively. The Mission E's design looks like a futuristic&...

Google's self-driving car

It’s one of their most ambitious projects to date, so naturally, Google’s self-driving car project requires some pretty impressive leadership. And on Monday, that leadership took the form of John Krafcik, a venerable elder statesman of the car industry whose resume includes 14 years at Ford Motor Company, a decade at Hyundai (five of which were spent as the president and CEO of the U.S. division), and most recently, as the president of TrueCar, a car-shopping service. “This is a great opportunity to help Google develop the enormous potential of self-driving cars,” said Krafcik in a statement. “This technology can save thousands of lives, give millions of people greater mobility, and free us from a lot of the things we find frustrating about driving today. I can’t wait to get started.” In addition to Krafcik’s extensive experience in the automotive industry, his background as a Stanford University-trained mechanical engineer means that Google’s autonomous car ...

2015 RAM 1500 Expert Review

Introduction The Ram 1500 pickup serves the half-ton pickup truck market, among the most contested in all motor vehicles. Permutations are numerous with three engines, two fuels, three cabs, two types of suspension, three bed sizes and almost all of them available in 2WD or 4WD.  The 2015 Ram 1500 is changed little over 2014 when Ram got a diesel engine and some styling details.  Ram's 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel is shared with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and in the Ram 1500 garners EPA ratings of 20/28 mpg City/Highway, higher than any other half-ton or mid-size pickup.  Gasoline engines include a 305-hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 395-hp 5.7-liter V8 Hemi. Ram V6 (gas and diesel) use an 8-speed automatic transmission, the V8 uses a 6-speed or an 8-speed automatic. Unlike the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, Ram offers its biggest engine in Regular Cab models.  The Ram 1500, considered a half-ton, can carry loads of stuff and can to...

2017 VW Tiguan SUV Aims For U.S. With Third Row, Higher MPG

That model changeover can’t come soon enough, as the new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan will finally give VW a foothold in one of the most important segments of the vehicle market—that of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Subaru Forester, among others. Sizing up, to fit in against CR-V, RAV4 For the current Tiguan, VW hasn’t consistently sold more than 30,000 units annually. That’s just a tenth of the annual sales of the Honda CR-V, and also a small fraction of Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, or Subaru Forester sales. What will bring this new Tiguan to the major leagues isn’t just a single thing. One most important improvement in the new Tiguan is that it’s now American-sized for a compact crossover; compared to the previous Tiguan, the short-wheelbase European Tiguan (shown in these pictures) is already 2.4 inches longer, with a wheelbase that’s three inches longer. But the long-wheelbase version—not to be officially shown until next year’s Paris...

Apple's electric car may hit the road in 2019

Last year, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook approved a mysterious project nicknamed "Titan." Current reports indicate that hundreds of Apple employees are working on this new venture in tech giant’s new automotive research lab, possibly with the ultimate goal of creating a fully-autonomous electric vehicle. The latest tidbit regarding the tech giant’s automotive ambitions comes via the Wall Street Journal, which on Monday reported 2019 as Apple’s target date for unveiling its much-talked-about electric vehicle. Apple recently hired former president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development Johann Jungwirth as Director of Mac Systems Engineering. Mercedes has expressed its intentions to create its own autonomous vehicles on numerous occasions in the past. Additionally, a number of staff from Apple and Tesla have crisscrossed between the two companies. Whether or not Apple acturally intends to build its own fully autonomous electric vehicle remains unclear. It's also possi...

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Base S550 4dr Rear-wheel Drive Sedan

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Expert Review

The following review is for a 2014 Model Year. There may be minor changes to current model you are looking at. All-new, with more of everything. Introduction The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been completely redesigned for the 2014 model year. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has a soft-spoken style but boasts technology unheard of when the previous S-Class arrived as a 2007 model.  Essentially, the new 2014 S-Class has more of everything. Leaving alone for a moment the sumptuous perforated-leather seats, the rear-seat legroom that would accommodate a stretched-out LeBron James, the illusion that the windshield actually seems to widen out toward the top, well, there's the extraordinary safety systems and sophisticated electronics built into this iconic automobile.  The 2014 S-Class deserves a doctorate as a study in automotive technology and safety features. It is stuffed with sensors, surrounded by cameras and radar, and it can s...

Mazda Koeru in 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show

In recent year, Mazda has redesigned nearly its entire lineup of vehiches, giving them a fresh look through the KODO design language, and a range of fuel-efficient SkyActiv engines. However, the CX-9 SUV has soldiered on virtually unchanged since 2006, remaining the only survivor of Mazda's partnership with Ford. At the same time, the 2010 Mazda CX-7 was discontinued in 2012 due to poor sales. While the CX-9 is most certainly in for a refresh soon, the CX-7 could return in the lineup.  At least that's what Mazda's new concept, launched at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, suggests. Dubbed Koeru, which is Japanese for "exceed" or "go beyond" the concept is described as the brand's "latest venture into the growing crossover SUv market, where the company is again looking to surpass existing standards and raise the bar for performance, efficiency and overall value." Though there's no official word as to what production model this crossover previews, it loo...

2016 Jaguar XF 35t Premium 4dr Rear-wheel Drive Sedan

2016 Jaguar XF Expert Review

The following review is for a 2015 Model Year. There may be minor changes to current model you are looking at. Introduction An all-new Jaguar XF is coming for the 2016 model year.  Until then, the 2015 Jaguar XF is available, a solid, stylish, midsize luxury sports sedan with rear-wheel drive. Elegant, flowing lines make the XF a more visually interesting alternative to many of the better-selling cars in its class. The 2015 Jaguar XF has presence, that intangible quality that allows it to stand out in any line of similar luxury sport entries. Underway, the Jaguar XF is smooth, quiet, and comfortable.  New Portfolio and Sport versions have been added for 2015, each offered with rear-drive or all-wheel drive, making a total of eight XF versions. A Premium Pack is now standard on the turbocharged four-cylinder XF 2.0T Premium, which has become the entry-level model. Standard equipment has been expanded, with fewer op...

2016 Acura TLX Base 4dr Front-wheel Drive Sedan

2016 Acura TLX Expert Review

The following review is for a 2015 Model Year. There may be minor changes to current model you are looking at. Best Acura sedan in decades. Introduction Way back in the mid-1980s when Honda's luxury brand was new, Acura's best car was the mid-size Legend. Available as a sedan or sport coupe, the Legend was a very good car for its time wearing a truly great name, unlike today's three-letter labels. We think the 2015 TLX is the closest thing yet to being Legend's long-awaited heir.  The 2015 Acura TLX is an all-new model logically positioned midway between Acura's compact ILX and its flagship RLX. The Acura TLX replaces both the TSX and TL. And, for a split personality as a refined country clubber that can mix it up with the best four-door automotive athletes, Acura loaded it with a unique blend of highly effective technologies.  The 2015 TLX comes in three flavors: The Acura TLX 2.4L comes with a 206-hp 2.4-liter i-VTEC ...
